National Bike to School Day
Conway area schools are encouraged to participate in National Bike to School Day on Wednesday, May 9, in coordination with the League of American Bicyclists’ National Bike Month. Among local organizations supporting the event are the Conway Advocates for Bicycling, the Conway Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Board, Safe Routes to School, MEMS, and The Ride. Special events are planned at Marguerite Vann Elementary School where students who ride bicycles to school that day will receive special recognition and all students will participate in a bike rodeo safety clinic in Mrs. Sherri Pillow’s PE classes. Students who do not own a bike helmet can receive one free through a “Growing Healthy Communities” grant from the Arkansas Coalition for Obesity Prevention. League Cycling Instructor Jim Bruce will direct the clinic with volunteers from the local support groups.
Advice to the Parents and Guardians of Young Bicyclists
Children under ten years of age riding bicycles should have parental supervision, and the children should ride on the sidewalk. Children of any age should be taught the following rules of safe bicycling:
1. Check your bicycle’s brakes and chain before riding
2. Wear light or bright-colored clothing so that motorists can see you
3. Always wear a bike helmet
4. Stop and check traffic before riding into any street
5. Don't ride at night and only ride with parent’s permission
6. Obey traffic signs and signals
7. Ride on the right-hand side of the street (or if under ten, on the sidewalk)
8. Give cars and pedestrians the right-of-way
9. Be extra careful turning left - motorists don't expect it
10. Avoid broken pavement, loose gravel and leaves - which can cause you to lose control of your bike.
